Mayor of Astana City Imangali Nurgaliyevich Tasmagambetov

He was born on December 9, 1956 in Novobogat village of Makhmabet area of Guriyev region. Kazakh.

Father - Tasmagambetov Nurgali (1926 – 1997).

Mother - Kokanova Dilda Matayevna (1930), pensioner.

He graduated from the Uralsk Pedagogical Institute named after Pushkin (1979), natural – geographical faculty, teacher of geography, biology.

From 1981 to 1991, he was a member of the Communist Party of Soviet Union.

From 1990 to 1991 he was a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, Deputy of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan of the 12th convocation (from LKSMK).

From 1973 to 1974, he served as a trainer of children's sports school in Makhambet village Guriyev region.

Since 1979, he was a teacher of geography and biology of Makhambet secondary school of Guriyev region.

 Since 1979, he served as a head of the organizational department of Makhmabet regional committee of LKSM of Kazakhstan, head of office of Komsomol work, head of division of Komsomol organizations of Guriyev regional committee of LKSM of Kazakhstan.

Since 1983, he was the first secretary of Guriyev city committee of LKSM of Kazakhstan.

Since 1985, he served as a head of organization division of Guriyev city committee of Communist Party of Kazakhstan. Since 1986 he was the first secretary of Guriyev regional committee of LKSM of Kazakhstan.

Since 1988, he has appointed as a head of department of work youth, department of social and economic problems of youth of Central Committee of LKSM of Kazakhstan, secretary of Central Committee of LKSM of Kazakhstan.

Since 1989, he served as the first secretary of Central Committee LKSM of Kazakhstan.

Since 1991- Chairman of the State committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan on youth affairs. Since 1993 –assistant of the President of Republic of Kazakhstan. Since 1995 – Deputy Prime-Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Since 1997 – Deputy Prime-Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Since 1997 , he worked as Deputy Head of Administration of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan – Head of Organization – Control Department of Administration of President of Kazakhstan. Since 1999 – Mayor of Atyrau region. Since December of 2000 – Deputy Prime-Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Since 2002, he served as Prime-Minister of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Since 2003 - theState Secretary of the Republic Kazakhstan. In 2004, he has been appointed Head of Administration of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, since December of 2004 till April of 2008 –Mayor of Almaty city. Since April of 2008 –Mayor of Astana city.

He is a member of Council Security Committee of the Republic of Kazakhstan. He is Chairman of the Public Council on realization of the state program “Cultural heritage” for 2004-2006, chairman of the National Commission of the Republic Kazakhstan on UNESCO affairs.

He is an honourable president of Federation of Bullet Shooting of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Chairman of board of International fund named after academician A.H. Margulan, a member of editorial board “Works of A.H. Margulan in 14 volumes”, Chairman of editorial council of monthly information – analytical newsletter “Sayasat – Politika”, a member of editorial council of quarterly scientific magazine “Eurasian community”.

He is Chairman of the State Commission of Kazakhstan on conducting of the Year of 10 anniversary of independence. National deputy of the Kazakh SSR (1990 – 1991).

He is the organizer of several international cultural expeditions in Mongolia, Western Kazakhstan and the Astrakhan region of Russia (the Caspian Sea: Oil and Culture), etc. The result of one of them (2000) has become the returning of copy of ancient Turk monument of monumental writing on stone – Kul-Tegin from Mongolia to Kazakhstan.   

He has a degree of candidate of philological sciences. The theme of his candidate's dissertation is “Ideological aspects of environmental issues” (1990).

He is a Doctor of Political Sciences. The theme of his doctoral dissertation: “Social Policy in the transit of political systems” (1997).

He is the author of such books as “Social and political renewal of Kazakhstan: Trends and Priorities” (1996), “Kazakhstan: evolution of state and society” (1996, co-author), “Thesaurus of the Constitution of Kazakhstan” (1996, co-author), “Social policy and political transformation” (1997), “Product master jewelers in Central Asia” (1997), “100 year of oil and gas industry of Kazakhstan (history and  present)” (1999, co-author), “From Beijing to Astana: history of capitals' movement” (2001, co-author), “Saraichik” (2002, co-author), “Kulpytas” (2002), “Centaurs of the Great steppe” (2005).

He is an author of several scientific works and articles on problems of socio-economic development and political science:

He has been awarded the “Parasat” Order (1998), the Order of“ The First President of Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev” (2004), “the Order of the Holy Prince Daniel Moscovsky” of the Russian Orthodox Church, the Order of Friendship of the Russian Federation and  numerous medals.

Hobby – “I am deeply interested in the problems of history, ethnography and archaeology of Kazakhstan, I am keen on collecting of things of applied art of people of the Central Asia.”

He is married. His wife, Bekkulova Clara Daumovna (1957 p.) is a teacher. He has two daughters, Asel (1979), she is a lawyer and Sofia (1983), a son - Nurgali Nursultan (1994). Grandchildren - Dinmuhammed (2000) and Nuruddin (2005).
