The historical part of the city |

In 1999, Astana was awarded by UNESCO prize – “City for peace”. A young capital, changing from day to day- is a symbol of creativity and progress of Kazakhstan’s people. A construction of the capital involved 71 states, 432 construction companies, and 135 factories provided construction materials. The main part of construction work was held on the left bank of the Yesil River, to form a New administrative center of the capital. Turkish, Italian, French, Switzerland companies built the new capital among with local construction companies. Annually, from 60 to 100 of medium and large facilities were put into operation. A rapid temp of construction and a support of the nation let to build a modern and contemporary city with a unique look and style. Today Astana- is a center of the Eurasian area, where different meetings on political, economical and social problems of the contemporaneity take place, it’s a place where foreign investments are attracted, where architectural masterpieces are erected and the boldest projects are embodied. |
In 1998, a leadership of the Republic of Kazakhstan decided to change a name of the new capital- the name “Astana” was given, that means “capital” in Kazakh language. A new stage of development started with new capital functions of the city. Astana became a center of the state, social and cultural life of the country. After an adoption by the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan of the general plan of Astana city, a large-scale works on active realization of the new plan structure of the capital were started. A large-scale reconstruction and modernization of the architectural appearance of the existing neighborhoods was stated on the right bank of the Yesil River. Residents of Astana became witnesses of that, how rapidly the urban landscape was changed. New parks, squares and gardens appeared in the city, as well as modern business centers and unique buildings. Astana became a city, which is associated with dreams, hopes and perspectives of all generations of Kazakhstanis. |
“Astana-Baiterek” monument of the young capital truly has become an architectural symbol of renewal, a symbol of Astana, a symbol of Kazakhstan. Moreover, if in a symbolic sense Baiterek is a center of the world, geographically, it is - the exact center of Eurasia.
The monument was built on the initiative of Nursultan Nazarbayev as a symbol of moving of the capital from Alma-Ata to Akmola in 1997. The author of the project was a famous English architect Norman Foster. “Today we have opened a remarkable object from which the actual operation of a new center of Astana has been started. A new capital will focus around it... Anyone who will rise, simply absorbs the steppe expanse and vast expanses of our state,” President said at the opening ceremony of the monument in 2002. - A new monument “Baiterek” is a symbol of life, a symbol of people and a symbol of peace.
The main attraction of Astana is a high metal structure with a large ball on the top. “Baiterek” by its location and composition structure performs cosmogonic representations of ancient nomads, according to legend which takes place at the junction of the worlds on the bank of the World River where a tree of life raises – Baiterek. The roots hold the land and a crown backs sky. The roots of this tree, respectively, are in the underworld, the tree itself, its trunk –in the underground and a crown - in heaven world. The height of buildings is 97 meters, and with the ball - 105 meters. Diameter of a gold-plated ball is 22 meters.
The height of buildings is 97 meters – this number marks the transfer of the capital from Almaty to Astana in 1997. The original “poplar” (in Kazakh –“Baiterek”) made of metal, glass and concrete is a unique in architectural thought and grandiose by its execution – a metal structure with a weight over 1000 tons is on the five hundred piles. This masterpiece of the world's first ball with a diameter of 22 meters and weighing 300 tonnes made of glass “chameleon” that changes color depending on the sunlight, “took" a record, breaking the 100-meter barrier.
The entire monument is divided into three levels: the bottom, which takes four and a half meters below ground, cafes, aquariums and a mini gallery “Baiterek”. There is an elevator with the help of which you can get the highest level - the cavity of the ball, which contains a bar and a panoramic room.
This view of the city allows you to estimate the “geometry” of the Master plan, once developed for Astana by Japanese world famous architect Kise Kurakava.
The significance of "Baiterek", as a symbol of a new stage in the life of Kazakh people, emphasizes artistic composition called “Ayala Alakai” with a print of the right hand of the President, located at a height of 97 meters, which symbolizes the date 1997 – a year of the proclamation of the new capital of Astana and, accordingly, a new starting point in the history of the country.
There is a wooden globe with stylized petals in the center of the composition, signed by 17 representatives of various world religions. And next to the globe there is a table of miracles where inside the hemisphere is a hand cast of the First President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. It is believed that if you put your hand in the imprint, music of the “heavenly spheres” starts to play. And at this moment you should make a wish.
A large park area around the monument “Astana-Baiterek” regularly is used for unusual events. For example, in 2008, a genuine avenue was created near the monument. It was decorated with 120 thousand famous Dutch tulips. This unique gift was made by the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Kazakh capital in honor of the official opening of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Astana in 2007. Unfortunately, tulips bloom only one week. But you can enjoy the blooming tulips every year.
And in 2010, by the invitation of the capital Mayor’s Office the International Exhibition of United Buddy Bears (Commonwealth bears) from Berlin was organized near “Baiterek”: 125 unique works of art created by 125 artists from 125 countries have been demonstrated in a peaceful neighborhood with each other
In 2002, the international jury awarded the Grand Prix to the “Astana-Baiterek” monument as the best project and construction among the CIS countries. The monument itself is known far outside Kazakhstan. Not surprisingly, Baiterek already been compared with the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Eiffel Tower in Paris and London's Big Ben.
Sightseeing tours for visitors are held in various languages -Kazakh, Russian, English, German, French ... “Baiterek” is located at: Left Bank, 1. To order tickets, arrange tours, please call: 8 - (7172) - 240-835.
The Flag of Kazakhstan - along with a crest and a hymn is the official state symbol of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The State flag of the Republic of Kazakhstan is a rectangular sky blue background with the image in the center of the sun with 32 rays above a soaring golden steppe eagle.
The hoist side displays vertical line with a national ornamental pattern. The image of the sun with rays, eagle and a vertical strip with a national ornament – in gold color.
The width of the flag to its length is 1:2. The author of the flag - well-known designer and artist, Honored Artist of Kazakhstan, Shaken Niyazbekov.
The blue flag with golden national ornament on the left, a golden sun and the silhouette of a soaring eagle in the center is a symbol of freedom, independence and sovereignty of the Republic of Kazakhstan. A background with one color is a symbol of unity of Kazakhstan.
The blue color is traditional for the Turkic peoples. At the flag it symbolizes cultural and ethnic unity of Kazakhstani people.
Sun - the source of life and energy. Therefore, the silhouette of the sun is a symbol of life. Time is determined for the nomad by the movement of the sun. According to the law of heraldry, the silhouette of the sun is a symbol of wealth and abundance. It is no accident that all 32 rays of the sun in the flag have the form of grain - the basis of abundance and prosperity.
An eagle or golden eagle in the world outlook of nomads has a special place. His image in the arms and flags of nations and ethnic groups in Kazakhstan has a long tradition. In the language of symbolism the silhouette of an eagle means state power, breadth and vision. For steppe it is a symbol of freedom, independence, commitment to goals, to height, flying to the future. However, the eagle, having a powerful force, able to give a fitting rebuff to anyone who tries to hinder the achievement of the future. The silhouette of an eagle came from the idea in striving young sovereign Kazakhstan for the height of world civilization.

A grand structure encloses the main axis of the new center of Astana, starting from the presidential palace "Ak Orda". The center became one of the most important urban sites. A well-known British architect Norman Foster designed a unique complex "Khan Shatyr".
Shopping Entertainment center “Khan Shatyr” situated on a 200 meters elliptical base. The name “Khan-Shatyr” tells to residents and guests of the capital that they will see a magnificent spectacle: as a giant nomad put a transparent steppe tent. Amazing eyes of visitors can see a cable network structure, which is captured by a mast at 150 meters.
Being the highest point of the new capital and the most spacious entertainment center in Central Asia, "Khan Shatyr" is visible from every point of Astana. The total area of "Khan Shatyr" is 127 thousand square meters.
Architectural and construction concept was designed to "fight" with the harsh climatic situation of the ancient Saryarka. Several natural landscape areas are represented at the new entertainment center of the capital.
The harmony of light, humidity and temperature is controlled during the whole year. There are a lot of green, which represents a different climate zones on stepped terraces, lots of light, which easily pass through a network structure, which covered by modern materials.
A transparent polymer coating due to a special chemical composition protects the interior of the complex from the sharp drops of temperature and creates a pleasant climate inside the complex.
A tropical water garden, a wave pool, a waterfall and a stream create a perfect architecture of the building. We can admire this from the top terrace, equipped with an observation deck (400 square meters) with superb views of the entire park. The territory of the shopping and entertainment center is carefully developed to create maximum comfort to the guests. A hypermarket situated at the level zero, with a 4 000 square meters, and a direct entrance to parking. In addition, comfortable elevators will move shoppers from the first level of colorful boutiques, to a lobby of the hypermarket.
This area is open and clearly visible. Indoor parking, designed for 700 parking places, and located at “zero” level. The project of a giant transparent tent became a center of entertainment and trade, with mini-golf course, a small lake, botanical gardens, beaches, beauty centers and salons, concert halls, cafes and offices.

The opening ceremony was planned to celebrations of the Day of capital in 2005. The solemn opening was attended by 5 000 schoolchildren, and President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev took part in developing of this green area, he planted a tree.
Three thousand different kinds of trees will be a witness of new feels of a capital generation. Beyond the usual to the northern city firs, pines, birches and poplars, maples and elms were planted.
An idea to name the park as “Park of Lovers” appeared thanks to a bronze statue of young men and women "My Happiness". Even benches dispose to romantic, for example “The bench of the first kiss” or “The bench of reconciliation”. A lot of wedding ceremonies, coinciding with the Day of the capital, is held in the park of lovers. All lawns and flower gardens were planned and planted strictly according to German technology. A big and original fountain situated in the center of the park. The park of lovers situated between the buildings of JSC NC “KazMunaiGaz” and Saryarka Avenue and occupies 14 hectares area.
The design of the park was carried out by «USB Group», construction by LTD "KazGerStroy." More than 3 500 trees and shrubs, 5 000 square meters of flower gardens, 116 000 square meters of lawns were planted at the park.
The pyramidal building of the Palace of peace and Accord built by the project of a prominent British architect, Norman Foster, became the genuine decoration of the new capital of Kazakhstan. The building was built at record periods: according to British architect, such projects as this pyramid are realized within six years, but in Astana it was succeeded in doing within a year. Opening of this architectural masterpiece took place on September1, 2006.
“The idea of the making the pyramid belongs to the President of Kazakhstan, and when we were offered to implement this idea, we gladly started realizing this project. I think the building is an incredible achievement, exciting result,” Norman Foster declared in the opening of his creation.
The Palace of peace and consent is decorated by glass and granite and due to that it stands out against the background of other buildings. The height of the pyramid is 62 metres and equal to 25-storied building. Each side has the same length on the base of a tetrahedron. The Pyramid was built on upland at a height of 15 metres. So, its entrance is located underground. The total area of the Palace of peace and consent is 25, 5 thousand square metres. Opera hall is found on the ground floor of the Pyramid with 1,5 thousand seats, on the upper floor of the pyramid there is a conference hall with 200 seats for holding convention of the leaders of world and traditional religions. Thereby, Palace of peace and consent is an unusual combination of two functional directions of the building.
Prayer places for representatives of 32 religious confessions, offices of the Assembly of nations of Kazakhstan, museums, exhibition hall, winter garden and university are located in the palace. Panoramic lift allows everybody to admire the beauty of green terraces and play of the light from the dome of the pyramid.
Walking to the top is more interesting: you have to walk up the undulating stairs through "hanging gardens of Astana" as they are called now. Foster\’s majestic pyramid is seen from both banks of the Ishim. At nights its top glows. The important events of republican and international dimensions take place here.
The newest and largest park of Astana is situated around the Palace of peace and consent. Its territory exceeds 80 hectares. The park consists of several zones: coastal, eastern and western. 5 complexes of fountains with the area of the water surface about 7000 square metres, Lower area, Big cascade, grotto, lake-source, 8 artificial ponds and channel are located in it. Nearly 27 thousand trees and 16 thousand shrubberies were transplanted here and lawns and flower beds occupy more than 600 thousand square metres. There is a twenty kilometres path in the park. And also excellent view of new administrative centre of the city in the lead with monumental building of residence of the President of Kazakhstan “Ak orda” is opened up. There is one more special feature of this park. Honestly, it is seen from the height only. Enormous stone lake is located on the territory adjoining to embankment. Its form symbolizes the shade from mythical bird “Samruk”.
Today, little remains from the old Tselinograd city, but Yesil Embankment is a truly historic place. As many years ago, the Capital Quay has a proud title of the most public place in Astana. An exquisite landscape consisted of sembioza of latest architectural works of modern and green area of the capital of the park stretches along the banks of Yesil River.
It is a place for rest for residents and visitors of the capital, there are many festivals and various shows. It does not get lonely at any time of day.
In the morning jogging people will be your company, in the afternoon - children, roller-skating, tourists taking pictures on a beautiful backdrop, and in the evening this area is for all romantics.
A rare pair of lovers, who lives in Astana, at least one times they walk along the embankment.
A beautiful light reflected in water, makes the atmosphere fantastic. In 2001, a monument to Kazakh sultan Kenesary Kassymov was installed. And now he is a guide for meetings and an involuntary witness to new happy stories.
If you once visit and walk along the quay it is impossible to be indifferent, because the magical properties of water is to calm and appease which both necessary to any living in the thick of the city life.
This cultural object, on the one hand, demonstrates the height of the Kazakhstan professional architectural creativity, and on the other - the history, culture, achievements and the power of a sovereign independent Kazakhstan.
The monument is a symbol of Kazakhstan’s independence and statehood. Its achievements and accomplishments is people’s property. These are effective economic reforms and democratic transformations, and a unique model of inter-ethnic harmony, and a competently built and social policy.
The form of “Kazak Yeli” - this is the stele, on the top of which the image of bird Samruk with four bronze bas -reliefs at the base is installed: “First President and people of Kazakhstan”, “Courage”, “Creation” and “Future”. The height of the monument is 91 meters, which symbolizes the year 1991, when Kazakhstan became independent.
The marble base of the monument represents the purity of thought and inter-ethnic harmony of the people of Kazakhstan. A stella demonstrates the commitment of Kazakhstan to further development and prosperity. The total area of the monument is 5.0 hectares and the area of adjacent territory - 11 ha.

Monument “Otan Korgaushylar” (“Defenders of Motherland”), a bronze bundle of ear turned to the sky, strikes with its size and majestic outline. The huge outlines of the globe, belted by majestic ornament, complete the symbolic design of stela, casting the thoughts about spiritual heritage of our Motherland. The figure, which reflects the image of Mother of mankind, meeting her sons - people of multinational Kazakhstan, with a pleased smile “was cut in” the stem of the bronze haycock. For the first time, woman appeared not grieving, but smiling and calling to unity and consent in such memorial complex. She keeps the golden bowl - a symbol of peace and prosperity.
40- metre-high stela, which consists of 101 ears, symbolizes the unity of all nations in Kazakhstan. The base of the complex “Defenders of Motherland”, presents the bas-relief, reflecting an episode of the battle of Kazakh batyrs with Dzhungarian invaders. The complex is completed with Eternal Flame at the foot of bronze monument.
On May 9, 2001this Eternal flame which is a fraction of the fire beside the memorial “28 heroes-panfilovtsi” was delivered from Almaty when the solemn ceremony of opening of the memorial “Defenders of Motherland” was held.
Around the monument there is a park, which became one of the favourite places of the citizens.
Contrary to the traditional square-shaped squares, one of the favorite places of residents and guests is a circular area with a memorable set of fountains. A circle is a symbol of hospitality. A circle combines in a single community under one roof over a hundred nationalities living in Kazakhstan.
A circle - this is solidarity and a bridge of friendship. The architectural idea and its realization were praised by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, he said about the Round Square: “... Complex solutions, colleagues’ helping, architectural search, thoughts about the future of the city, the legend and the toponymy of the edge, details of everyday life, historical analogies, landscape and aesthetics of Astana city, in a word, my thoughts and deeds for the new capital - all of them are here ...”
The complex was completed and opened in 2003.
Its total area is 70,000 square meters, a radius - 165 meters. 36-storey building of the Ministry of Transport and Communications – “Transport Tower”, building KazTransOil, “KMG”, Eurasian Bank outlines the perimeter of the square.
The complex also includes boutiques, shops, restaurants, cafes, service stations.
The landscape of the Circle is very thought-out, in the center of which is a fountain.
Good parking places are located. Besides, a complex is controlled from the underground floors, where all life-support systems, technical communication are removed.
And of course, we should mention the fountains. One of them is a cascade which enjoys much love from the children who are not averse to hot to dip his feet in warm water. The second, located in the heart of the Circle, is deserves a separate story: 17-mode, with a diameter of 50 meters and the height of the jet - 17. Due to its specific nighttime illumination light from the headlights forms shanyrak in the air above the fountain.
Famous architect Kisho Kurokava, developing architectural plan of the construction the new capital of Kazakhstan, has defined the symbiosis of the city and nature as the main by priority, according to which Astana must become a green oasis in golden steppe. According to confirmed concepts, by 2030 green space in the city will have more than 6 thousand hectare or one and a half million planted trees and nearly sixteen million shrubberies. Certainly, realization of this grandiose project needs not one decade, but the first steps in this direction have been already made. Six parks, about twenty gardens, water-green boulevard in the new administrative centre of the capital are the result of the work of last "five-year plan". And this work goes on. The plan-minimum which was put by the governors before municipal economy is 10 new gardens per a year with the area 13 hectare.
The concept of the city planting expects the creation of “eco-city” with its “eco-wood”, ‘eco- corridor”, “eco-space”. Natural meadows, as well as artificial lakes and water reservoirs will be surrounded by different sorts of trees. From bird's eye view the capital will present fanciful colorful rug. According to ecologists a new green “dress” of the capital will not only decorate its look, but also protect from natural cataclysms. The green zones are transplanted by special trajectories and form the reliable shield from strong gusts of wind.
The project on creation of "green zone" around Astana is implemented on a full scale. Specialists intend to surround the young capital with luxurious "ring" by the end of 2015. "Emerald necklace" with general extent of 75 thousand hectare is half done.
Moreover, architectural masterpieces are also created by “green” architects alongside with city planners: landscape designers tackled beautification of the capital and promised "to dress" the gardens and parks of Astana “from couturiers”.
Administrative-technological complex, in which Ministry of Transport and Communications is found, was put into operation in October 2003. At that moment it was the highest building in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the highest office block in CIS - 170 metres with entourage spire.
Its total area is more than 32 thousand square metres, including useful area - 28,7 thousand square metres. From 170 metres 155 or 34 floors are “working”. The other 15 metres are for entourage spire.
The building is equipped with 10 express lifts, providing even distribution of passenger flow. As an alternative to the lifts in this building there are, certainly, stairways. And if someone decides to walk upstairs, he has to go up 648 steps. “Overcoming this obstacle” you will get the recompense - a miraculous panorama of the city from bird's eye view. On the 32th floor there is an observation area - a circular balcony. On the observation area there are two more floors of the hardware. Аnd that very spire is on them.
Illuminated at nights with various coloured searchlight and surrounded with the lights of new city centre, it sets the new level, new height in architecture of Astana at the beginning of XXI century. But there is such a tendency that in rapid building of the young capital of Kazakhstan no skyscraper manages to carry the palm for a long time. And since 2009 the building of Mintranskom is not the highest one in the capital: now in the business centre of Astana there is a new leader, an office of national company “Kazakhstan Temir Zholy” (Kazakhstan railway).
This high-rise administrative complex consists of two towers on the 37th and 40th floors. The height of this modern skyscraper forms 175 m. But the leadership of the office KTZh also seems to be not so long.
The construction of 88 storied multifunctional complex of hotel “Abu Dabi Plaza” started in Astana. According to author's scheme of the project, “Abu Dabi Plaza” will become the highest building in Central Asia and the fourteenth in the world.
A new sight of Kazakhstan, mosque “Nur Astana” appeared on March 2005 in Astana. It is surrounded by ultra-modern buildings and looks perfectly unexpectedly but harmonically among them. The elegance of the East is embedded in the ensemble of glass, concrete, steel and granite. An opening ceremony of the Islamic Cultural Center was attended by President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev. He gifted to the mosque a veil with Koran inscriptions, which adorned the Kaaba and Koran, and was printed at the typography of the King of Saudi Arabia. Construction of the complex was started in 2002 with financial support from the State of Qatar. The mosque is built on a grant in the amount of 6 840 000 dollars.
The construction is a model of elegance of the eastern architecture. Mosque is crowned by four minarets with a height 62 meters. The dome covered with gold.
